THE 500 HATS OF BARTHOLOMEW CUBBINS - 75TH ANNIVERSARY PRINT
Mixed-Media Pigment Print on archival Somerset Paper
Paper Size: 30"H x 21"W  -  Image Size: 26"H x 17"W
Edition Size: 175
Opening Price: $1,295

In conjunction with the Hats Off to Dr. Seuss! exhibition and in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, the Art of Dr. Seuss is proud to announce the exclusive commemorative print.

This artwork pays tribute to the book's anniversary and to those who, like Theodor Seuss Geisel, live adventurous lives as the "wearers of many hats."

The roles we play throughout our lifetime emerge as the biographical metaphors marking the story of a unique life.  Be it parent, grandparent, teacher or friend, in the end it is your distinctive collection of "figurative hats" which describe to all who you are and how you lived your life.

THE CAT THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

THE CAT THAT CHANGED THE WORLD
Mixed Media Pigment Print on Paper
Image & Paper Size - 39 5/8"H x 28 7/8"W
EDITION SIZE 850

When The Cat in the Hat first stepped into our lives and onto the world stage in 1957, Theodor Seuss Geisel couldn’t possibly have known the impact his iconic feline would have on literacy, education, and generations of children and adults around the world.

We happily celebrate that impact with the newest release from The Art of Dr. Seuss.

ABDUCTION OF THE SABINE WOMAN

Picture
Based on Ted Geisel's earliest and largest oil painting.

Medium: Hand Embellished Fine Art Pigment Print on Canvas
Image Size: 56" x 56"
Opening Price: $4,995

Ted Geisel created his epic painting (circa 1930) for the Dartmouth Club on 37th Street in New York City, where it hung until the club changed locations in 1934. Today, the 5'5" x 5'4" original painting resides in the permanent collection of the Hood Museum of Art, a gift of President Ernest Martin Hopkins, Class of 1901.

The exclusively authorized Abduction of the Sabine Woman estate edition celebrates Ted's contribution to art history and immortalizes this epic period in time, which led to a modern day marriage tradition...

AFTER DARK IN THE PARK

Picture
In the newest Art of Dr. Seuss release, we land in the middle of a magical decade between Seuss' first professionally published cartoon (1927) and the publication of his first children's book (1937).

The limited edition After Dark in the Park, captures Seuss's unique use of punchy color set against a midnight black background, and offers a sneak peak at many of the animals and characters that would evolve into Seuss's much-loved repertoire of bestiary.

We even witness the stacking turtles!

CARBONIC WALRUS

Picture
To this day, Ted’s self-titled Collection of Unorthodox Taxidermy remains as some of the finest examples of his inventive and multidimensional creativity.

Dr. Seuss’s Carbonic Walrus, with one tooth pointed skyward and the other toward the ocean’s floor, is now presented as a hand-painted limited edition cast resin sculpture. With just three releases remaining, I encourage collectors who are considering taxidermy artworks to act now while this unique opportunity is still available.

Dimensions: 13.5" x 13.5" x 9.5"

A PLETHORA OF FLOWERS

Picture
In Happy Birthday To You! Ted Geisel painted fully-developed artworks for each page of this book, reminiscent of the works he did privately for his own pleasure.

Perhaps the most elaborate painting from the entire series comes when you’re taken into the Birthday Flower Jungle, seen in this newest release from the Art of Dr. Seuss collection.

GREEN CAT WITH LIGHTS a.k.a. Stroogo Von M.

Picture
If you take a close look, you will notice something missing from this painting. The usual "Dr. Seuss" signature has been replaced with the moniker, "Stroogo Von M."

Just a few months ago, while talking with Audrey Geisel about artworks in the new Secrets of the Deep book, the question of Stroogo Von M. came up.  Audrey replied, “Oh, Ted liked to hang that artwork in the entryway of ‘Seuss House’ [the Geisel home].  When people would come in, they would invariably ask about the painting. Ted would answer, ‘That’s my Stroogo Von M. How do you like it?’ In return, what he would get from friends was an honest opinion without them knowing it was his painting. It was one of Ted’s great practical jokes. On occasion, someone would say, ‘Ah yes, I know Stroogo’s work,’ which would say something quite different about the house guest.”

Green Cat with Lights falls into the category of Ted’s “Big Cats” along with Joseph Katz and His Coat of Many Colors, Indistinct Cat with Cigar, Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks, Alley Cat for a Very Long Alley, and Wisdom of the Orient Cat. These are some of the most sought-after and cherished artworks of the entire collection.

THE CAT BEHIND THE HAT

Picture
Ted Geisel’s most iconic self-portrait ran in the July 6, 1957 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Appearing just four months after the launch of The Cat in the Hat, this classic portrait depicts Dr. Seuss as his mischievous alter ego, complete with red and white stovepipe hat, cat ears, and the Cat’s now famous red bow tie. Ted and his hatted Cat shaed an affinity for bow ties, each wearing them throughout their long lives.

CUDDLE FISH

Picture
Collection curator Bill Dreyer writes in the preface to the Secrets of the Deep book: “While researching Ted’s paintings and sculpture at his La Jolla home, I became aware that Ted and Audrey kept more than forty artworks behind a concealed false door that were publicly unknown and unpublished, all waiting for Audrey to reveal them to Ted’s fans.”

Cuddle Fish is one of these artworks, kept close at hand by Ted throughout his lifetime, which resides still with Audrey in the Geisel home. In the vein of the Horton Line Drawing, this work exudes classic Seussian charm and confirms the Good Doctor’s breezy artistic talent.
